In addition, one of the team members – a student of St. Petersburg State University Daniil Klyuev – became the absolute champion of the Olympiad in the individual standings, gaining 97 points, ”the message says.

The International Mathematics Competition is one of the most prestigious mathematical Olympiads for students. The competition is organized by University College London at the invitation of the American University in Bulgaria. The Olympiad traditionally lasts two days. In each round, students independently solve five problems from the field of algebra, analysis, geometry and combinatorics for five hours.

Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov in 2018, 502 applicants were enrolled – winners and prize-winners of the Olympiads, the press service of the university reports.

“This year 502 applicants were enrolled without examinations. The author of the famous “Alice in Wonderland” could have turned 185 today. The editors of the Russian Education portal decided to recall some interesting facts related to the life of the writer himself, as well as quotes from his works that have entered our lives.

Lewis Carroll’s real name is Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, or Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.

The writer we know was a professor of mathematics at Oxford University (1855-1881).

Carroll was left-handed.

In May 1850, he was enrolled at Christ Church College, Oxford University. He did not study very well, but thanks to his outstanding mathematical ability after completing his bachelor’s degree, he won a competition to give math lectures at Christ Church, which he gave for the next 26 years.

According to the charter of the college, he was ordained a deacon, which gave him the right to read sermons without work in the parish.

He began his writing career while attending college. He wrote poems and short stories, sending them to various magazines under the pseudonym “Lewis Carroll”. This pseudonym was coined on the advice of the publisher and writer Yates.

Since 1854, his work began to appear in serious English publications: “Comic Times” and “The Train”.

In 1856, a new dean appeared at the college – Henry Liddell, along with his wife and 5 children, among whom was 4-year-old Alice, who became the prototype of the book’s heroine.

In 1864, he wrote his most famous book, Alice in Wonderland.

The publication of the book in 1865 radically changed children’s literature: it introduced an element of ridiculous fun in a genre entirely built on moralizing.

Together with Liddon, Carroll visited Russia.

This was Carroll’s only overseas trip. He himself described it in his Diary of a Travel to Russia in 1867 (not intended for publication, but published posthumously), which contains tourist impressions of the cities visited, notes on meetings with Russians and Englishmen in Russia, and recordings of individual Russian phrases.

Carroll also published many scientific papers in mathematics under his own name. He studied Euclidean geometry, linear and matrix algebra, mathematical analysis, probability theory, mathematical logic and entertaining mathematics (games and puzzles).

His achievements in mathematical logic were ahead of their time.

Scientists believe that Carroll’s work influenced the book: in it, in a satirical form, mathematical innovations of the 19th century appear.

One of his hobbies was photography.

The prototype for the Dodo was Carroll himself, due to his real name (Charles Dodgson).
