The field of education has shifted a lot over the past few decades. Traditional classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning techniques which offer flexibility pre-recorded courses with class meetings which are conducted via videoconferencing software that can be used in real-time. But even these online methods can still fall short for students who prefer the live interaction of a face-to -face classroom.
Live online learning is an alternative strategy to other online education strategies. It permits students and instructors to communicate in real-time through videoconferencing programs such as Zoom. These classes allow students to ask questions, clarify their confusion and develop a deeper understanding of the material.
While there are numerous benefits to using live learning but it can be challenging for some students to adjust to this type of online learning. This study examines students’ ability to learn online and identifies core factors that affect this. The findings reveal that motivation to learn, self-directed learning and online communication are the most significant influences. The researchers also conducted a multi-group study and post hoc tests to examine the differences between genders, undergraduate, graduate and sub-degree students. The researchers found that postgraduates are more prepared for live learning than undergraduates and sub-degree students.
It is suggested that instructors establish clear expectations for what students need to know and do prior to, during, and after an Live Session. This includes providing additional resources like summaries, gist quizzes, sketches, concept maps and study guides. Instructors should also create exercises to reinforce what students have learned – such as reviewing, practicing debating, discussing, and analyzing.
